The Old Chicago Shake Down

I am not really sure what I did to anger the good folks at Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s office. Surely it had to be something. There really can't be any other logical explanation why they would take time from their busy day to send two Illinois State Police investigators to my office last March.

But I am getting ahead of myself.

It really can be quite unnerving to have two plain clothes policemen flashing their badges in front of clients and fellow employees demanding to speak to me know. They made no appointment. They made no telephone call. Just two State Policemen walking into our office indicating they were investigating a certain travel booking made with our sister company, Planet Travel.

And they needed to talk to me know. What to do?

My experiences provide a rather interesting take on the way politics are still operating in the State of Illinois.

It is not a very pretty picture.

I don't believe I have ever done anything to anger the Governor. Perhaps it was my lack of political donations to Blagojevich’s campaign that is the issue. But our companies do not do business with the State of Illinois so there is no interest in our part to donate. Or pehaps, as I have later discovered, it was something completely different.

Apparently if you are politically connected, you can have the State Police investigate whomever you want. If you are entitled to a travel refund, and that travel refund is not being processed fast enough to your liking, you can call the Governor's office and ask them to intervene. I'm sorry investigate, why your travel package refund is taking too long. And don't forget to make the State Police shake their tree to speed up the transaction.

Over the next few weeks I plan on posting my story. Something we have started calling the "old Chicago shakedown."

It is pretty scary. And I hope it never happens to you.
